On the eve of 6th March, 1957, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah is reported to have made a profound statement. "From now on, there is a new African who is ready to fight his own battle and show that after all, the black man is capable of managing his own affairs." Sixty-eight years later, it remains arguable whether the black man has been capable of managing his own affairs.

While some black man-filled African countries can be said to have shown capability, same cannot be said for several others.

Sadly, a diagnosis of Ghana's situation depends on who is the doctor.

As a citizen of Ghana, who has been around for a significant part of the 68 years of independence, my view is that we are capable of managing our own affairs, yet we have not been able to do so.
