Government has cut the budget for the 68th Independence Day celebrations by 90%, reducing costs from GH₵15 million under the previous administration.

Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, explained that this year's event, set for March 6 at Jubilee House, has been scaled down to just over 500 participants, compared to thousands in previous years. "In the past, we had 60 contingents of 60 personnel each-about 3,600 participants.

Now, we have reduced this to ensure lower costs," he said.

Kwakye Ofosu confirmed that the new budget is only a tenth of last year's, emphasizing that the scaled-down celebration does not diminish its importance. "President Mahama believes Independence Day must be celebrated, but in a way that allows savings to be redirected to other essential areas," he noted.
