A JoyNews team on a mission to assess the state of illegal mining operations, popularly known as galamsey, in Dunkwa and other communities in the Central Region was forced to cut short its visit after an unexpected confrontation with an opposition political figure and an enraged crowd.

The team's work was disrupted when the constituency chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Dunkwa, accompanied by a mob of agitated illegal miners, confronted them over what he claimed was a failure to consult him before carrying out their assessment.

Reports indicate that the chairman and his supporters threatened to resist any attempt by the team to visit mining sites within the Dunkwa township, with tensions escalating to the point where he allegedly warned of a standoff with armed military personnel escorting the journalists.

Faced with the growing hostility, the team was left with no choice but to abandon the exercise for their safety.
