The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Eastern Region is intensifying all efforts to create the needed awareness on fire safety to further reduce the 70 percent (70%) preventable fire outbreaks in the country.
This has become necessary following the successful prompt prevention of near fire incidents at the Koforidua Central Market and the Juaben Serwaa Market after sparks were detected and quickly extinguished by fire fighters who had been stationed at the markets as part of service renewed operational strategies in dealing with the surge in market fires.
Speaking to Channel One News on activities earmarked for the commemoration of the 2025 Fire Safety Week on the theme " Fire Safety Key to Development and National Security", the Eastern Regional Fire Service Commander ACFO Timothy Osafo- Affum disclosed that the service will hold series of media engagements as personnel also move from their fire stations into market centers, churches, schools and other public places to engage the local people on the need to ensure safety at all times to protect lives and properties. "We have earmarked a week for fire safety activities.
This is to drum home and create the necessary awareness for the public to be aware that fire causes a lot of damage to us, including the environment, and therefore we should be aware and put in the necessary measures so that fire will not occur. "For us, we would have wished that any fire that occurs would have been fires that could not be prevented because there are certain fires, no matter what you do, they would occur.
