The Deputy Minister-Designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Rita Naa Odorley Sowah, has emphasised that proper issuance and enforcement of building permits by local assemblies is crucial in addressing Accra's perennial flooding problem.

Speaking on the matter, during her vetting with the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday, February 28, 2024, she highlighted the need for strict adherence to zoning regulations, particularly in protecting green belt areas and ensuring that construction only occurs in designated development zones. "Per the law, there are areas demarcated as green belts and others earmarked for development.

It is our responsibility to ensure that assemblies issue permits before any construction takes place.

Assemblies are the authorities in their jurisdictions, and without a permit, no one should be allowed to build.
