In a move aimed at instilling discipline and fitness among Ghanaian youth, President has announced plans to introduce short military training as part of the National Service Scheme.

The announcement was made during his first State of the Nation Address to Parliament on February 27, 2025, during his second term as president.

President Mahama emphasised the need for a legally robust framework to govern national service in the country.

He stated that he has tasked the Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment to coordinate the preparation of a legislative instrument to support the implementation of the recently passed National Service Authority Act 2024 (Act 1119). "I've also tasked the Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment to coordinate and present to Parliament a Legislative Instrument to support the implementation of the newly passed National Service Authority Act 2024.
