Deputy Minister Designate for Education, Dr Clement Apaak has proposed a national dialogue to review the country's method of assessing final-year students in basic schools and senior high schools.
His suggestion came in response to a question by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Daboya-Mankarigu, Shaibu Mahama, on the monopolistic nature of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) allowing the council to dictate, directly and indirectly, the country's academic calendar.
Speaking during his vetting before Parliament's Appointments Committee on Tuesday, February 25, Apaak noted the lack of competition in the academic domain allowing WAEC to fully regulate examinations of candidates.
He posits that a nationwide discussion on the academic evaluation method is crucial to rectify the inefficiencies and challenges facing the education sector, especially on the part of WAEC. "I will suggest a national dialogue on our assessment methods to determine the way forward.
