Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has called for the establishment of clear and enforceable standards to regulate small-scale mining practices in Ghana.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom, he highlighted the devastating impact of both legal and illegal mining, noting the difficulty in distinguishing between the destruction caused by licensed and unlicensed operators.

Nelson also questioned the effectiveness of the current licensing system, arguing that merely issuing permits is insufficient.

He further urged authorities to focus on the mining methods used by licensed companies, emphasizing that inadequate supervision in this area contributes to environmental damage. "If you go to the field, and you see the devastation you cannot differentiate that small mining company that has a license from the one that hasn't.
