At the 38th African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, President John Dramani Mahama called for collective action to secure reparations for Africans and people of African descent.

Speaking at the launch of the AU's 2025 theme, "Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations," he emphasised the need for stronger legal and institutional mechanisms at all levels to turn justice from a mere conversation into reality.

The AU's initiative aligns with Agenda 2063's vision for an integrated and prosperous Africa.

It aims to mobilise political will, foster partnerships, and break the silence on historical injustices, including slavery, colonialism, apartheid, and neo-colonial exploitation, which continue to fuel economic and social disparities.
