At the 2024 Munich Security Forum in Germany, President John Dramani Mahama underscored the need for Africa to take charge of its agricultural future, urging the continent to reduce its dependence on foreign food aid.

His remarks came amid reports that American farmers were raising concerns over reduced food purchases by USAID, which has historically played a key role in supplying food assistance to Africa. "But I was just reading US farmers are beginning to complain because USAID was the biggest mopper of excess food for food aid to Africa, and USAID is not doing the auctions that mop up the excess US food.

And so the US farmers are complaining, but it's an opportunity for Africa to increase food production," Mahama stated.

His comments reflect a broader shift in global aid dynamics, where donor agencies are re-evaluating their priorities.
