Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has criticised his successor, Dominic Ayine, over the handling of high-profile criminal cases, cautioning that Ghana's justice system could be at risk if prosecutions are influenced by defence lawyers rather than the public interest.
Speaking at a press conference today, Dame expressed concern over the discontinuation of cases involving significant financial losses to the state. "The people of Ghana should be very scared if we have an Attorney-General whose prime consideration for the discontinuation of criminal cases involving the loss of billions of Ghana Cedis is the position of defence lawyers on charges preferred against their clients rather than the interests of the Republic in the prosecution of crime," he warned.
His remarks come amid growing scrutiny of Ayine's approach to corruption-related prosecutions, with critics questioning whether legal decisions are being guided by political considerations rather than the need for accountability.
