Former President Nana Akufo-Addo has reiterated his stance on illegal mining (galamsey), stating that he risked his political career to tackle the issue despite facing significant electoral losses in mining districts. "What I said, I was putting my presidency on the line-that's what I meant.
I was prepared to take the political risk involved in trying to deal with this galamsey phenomenon," Akufo-Addo emphasized during a recent media interaction.
He attributed the ruling New Patriotic Party's (NPP) poor performance in mining areas during the last election to his firm stance against illegal mining, explaining that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) leveraged the issue for political gain. "The NDC presidential candidate and the party went around mining areas, saying that my policy to stop galamsey would be reversed if they came to power, and that those already in jail for galamsey offenses would be granted amnesty," he alleged.
