The Ghana Police Service will appoint Sports Security Officers across all 16 regions as part of efforts to enhance stadium security. The decision follows a high-level meeting between the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo-Dampare, the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and club representatives after recent violent incidents in the Ghana Premier League.
The security officers will serve as key liaisons between the police and the football authorities, helping to prevent violent incidents before they escalate.
The police also plan to establish a dedicated Sports Policing Unit in the medium term to oversee safety operations at football events.
These interventions come in response to the tragic death of Yaw Frimpong, an Asante Kotoko supporter, during a league match against Nsoatreman FC.
