The former spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, Kwasi Kwarteng has expressed that the proposed idea of scrapping the teacher trainee allowance and replacing it with a policy to pay the first year's university fees is "illogical".
Speaking on GH Today with Lantam Papanko, the former spokesperson stated that while one could argue that the teacher trainee allowance has outlived its usefulness, it would not make sense to replace it with a new policy aimed at first-year university students. "You can make a case of not paying teacher training allowance because your case is that it has outlived its usefulness.
But it would be illogical on one side to scrap the teacher trainee allowance because you think it has outlived its usefulness and pay first year university students' fees", he remarked.
Kwasi Kwarteng's comments come in response to a growing debate over whether the teacher trainee allowance, which has long been a part of the government's support system for prospective educators, should continue.
