In a dramatic display of dissent, the Members of Parliament (MPs) from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday, February 4, 2024, staged a protest by dressing in red and black attire, symbolising resistance, following the Speaker's decision to suspend three of their colleagues.
The controversy began on Friday, January 31, when the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, suspended three NPP MPs and one NDC MP for alleged misconduct at the Appointments Committee.
The suspended MPs, Frank Annoh Dompreh, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli as well as Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, were accused of disrupting proceedings and failing to adhere to parliamentary decorum.
The decision, however, has been met with fierce opposition from the NPP caucus, who argue that the suspensions were politically motivated and out of the jurisdiction of the Speaker of Parliament.
