Former Majority Leader of the 8th Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has advised the Majority and Minority leaders in the House to meet with the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to resolve the suspension of four MPs following Thursday's altercation at the Appointments Committee.
Speaking on Newsfile on JoyNews with Samson Lardy Anyenini on Saturday, the former Suame MP condemned the violent engagement by the MPs but opposed the Speaker's decision to suspend the MPs, arguing that he is not clothed with the power to do so. "I disagree with the methods applied by the Speaker; his actions are outside the standing orders." To resolve the issue and allow the MPs to return to Parliament, he suggested that the two leaders use non-sitting days to "have a quick meeting with the Speaker to resolve this matter." He added, "It is time for the two leaders to urgently engage with the Speaker.
We need to resolve this, so the two of them should meet with him over the weekend." Mr Bagbin suspended the MPs for two weeks, effective immediately, following the chaotic incident that saw some MPs at each other's throat, with others pushing and shoving furniture and equipment.
The suspended MPs are Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib.
