Speaker of Parliament Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has strongly criticized the altercation that erupted between New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) members during the vetting process at the Appointments Committee on Thursday, January 30, 2025.
Addressing the House the following day, Bagbin described the incident as "disgraceful and deeply regrettable," emphasizing that it undermines the integrity of Parliament. "Parliamentary privilege does not and will never extend to lawlessness," he declared, condemning the lack of decorum displayed by members during the heated session.
The Speaker expressed concern over the timing and setting of the chaos, stating: "It is deeply troubling that this is the time that such an incident is happening within the precincts of Parliament." Bagbin warned that Parliament's credibility is at stake, cautioning lawmakers against behavior that damages public trust. "This House must acknowledge that it is rapidly eroding public confidence," he stressed.
In response to the fracas, the Speaker announced the formation of a 7-member special committee tasked with conducting a full-scale investigation into the events.
