Parliament has established a nine-member committee, chaired by Collins Dauda, Member of Parliament (MP) for Asutifi South to explore pension scheme models suitable for former Members of Parliament.
This follows a proposal by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga to create a pension scheme fund using proceeds from carbon credits to support former lawmakers.
The Majority Leader during proceedings in parliament on Wednesday, January 29 made a formal statement appealing to the house to establish a Pension Scheme Fund to provide for former lawmakers.
This he said will ensure that MPs who exit the house and are mostly found in deplorable situations are catered for by the scheme. "We want to establish a scheme, we do not want the pensions of Members of Parliament to become a burden on the taxpayer and so we are proposing to design an MP's pension scheme that is going to be funded from carbon credit," he stated.
