The Alliance for Media Literacy and Accountability (AMLALO) has expressed grave concern over the violent confrontation in Obuasi involving miners and military personnel stationed at AngloGold Ashanti's mining site.

The unrest, which resulted in the loss of lives and destruction of property, has intensified tensions within the community, drawing nationwide attention and calls for urgent intervention.

On the night of January 18, 2025, military personnel guarding the Obuasi gold mine reportedly clashed with a group of miners attempting to access the restricted site.

According to the Ghana Armed Forces, about 60 individuals, armed with locally manufactured rifles, breached the security perimeter and opened fire on a military patrol, prompting the soldiers to return fire.
