Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has underscored the importance of democracy in ensuring the protection of individual rights and freedoms, noting that the process of self-governance, while imperfect, is preferable to any alternative.

He said this on Monday, January 27, when he served as keynote speaker and special guest at the National Conference on strengthening democracy in Nigeria.

Dr Bawumia reiterated that for democracy to thrive, it requires both political integrity and a deep respect for the principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability in governance. "The right of the citizenry to choose leaders in a free and transparent manner is sacrosanct and remains one of the most vital anchors of a true democratic dispensation.
