Speaker of Parliament Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has added his voice to the ongoing controversy surrounding the statue of former President Nana Akufo-Addo in Takoradi.
Bagbin, during a diplomatic visit to Ghanaian communities in Cote d'Ivoire last week, expressed his disapproval, emphasizing that leadership should be about setting good examples. "When you are alive, it is not advisable to build a statue for yourself.
When you are no more, the people who admire what you have done will build one for you," he remarked.
The statue, unveiled in November 2024, quickly sparked widespread public backlash, with many Ghanaians questioning its relevance in light of the Western Region's developmental challenges.
