A human rights advocacy organization Challenging Heights is proposing the establishment of a commission of inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the clash between some military personnel and civilians at the premises of AngloGold Ashanti which has led to the death of nine persons.
Even though the organization recognizes government's efforts in handling the matter so far, it expressed the view that establishing the facts of the issue could be far-fetched should the investigation be left to just the police. "The president's call for investigation into the clashes is commendable.
However, we are calling for a commission of inquiry into the military clashes with the members of the Obuasi community.
We believe that asking one security agency to probe into the actions of another security agency may not engender confidence in the report."- a portion of a statement issued by the organization and signed by Emmanuel Annobil, Advocacy Officer, read.
