Bibiani Gold Stars defender Vincent Atinga has highlighted the financial struggles faced by players in the Ghana Premier League, stressing the need for better salaries to sustain their careers and retain talent in the league.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Akoma 87.9 FM, Atinga described playing in the league as extremely challenging due to the low pay offered to players.
He noted that this has pushed many footballers to seek opportunities in leagues in Ethiopia, Zambia, Sudan, and Rwanda. "Life after football is not easy; there is so much to live for.
Leaving Ghana to seek greener pastures is a smart idea because it is difficult to play in Ghana, especially with the fields and salary," Atinga stated. "If a player performs well during a season and is offered a contract, he or she will go." Atinga proposed the introduction of a salary cap to ensure players can earn a decent living while remaining in the league. "At the very least, we should be paid GH₵1,000.
