The vetting process for ministerial nominees remains a cornerstone of Ghana's democratic framework, offering an opportunity to evaluate the suitability of appointees to lead public offices.
However, the Executive Director of the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), Rasheed Draman, has expressed disappointment over the opposition New Patriotic Party's (NPP) handling of the process.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday, January 21, monitored by MyNewsGH, Draman criticized the approach adopted by the NPP members of Parliament's Appointments Committee, highlighting a series of missteps that he believes undermined the purpose of the vetting process. "As a leader, I believe he has the opportunity all the time, either in committee sittings or in the plenary, to speak on national issues," Draman said, referring to the conduct of the minority leader.
He pointed out that issues unrelated to the nominees dominated the discussions, questioning the prioritization of such topics during a process meant to scrutinize potential ministers. "I would have thought that some of the issues that he brought to the committee, which were unrelated to the nominee, would have been issued that he could have reserved for maybe the much bigger platform of the plenary of Parliament," Draman added.
