Former US President Donald Trump has initiated changes to the government's stance on gender and diversity, delivering on campaign promises that resonate with his conservative base.

In his inaugural address, Trump declared, "As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female." The administration announced plans for an executive order, set to be signed on Monday, which would officially recognise only two sexes - male and female - and assert that gender cannot be changed.

The executive order forms part of Trump's broader agenda targeting "woke" culture and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programmes.

An administration official confirmed that the order would eliminate DEI initiatives within federal agencies, withdraw funding for such programmes, and review offices renamed under DEI-related policies.
