AngloGold Ashanti Ghana has confirmed a violent incident on its Obuasi concession, where seven illegal miners lost their lives, and several others, including a member of the security forces, sustained injuries.

The company stated that on the evening of January 18, a large group of armed illegal miners attempted to forcibly enter the fenced operational area in the northern section of the concession.

Authorities, per the statement, were mobilised to prevent the intrusion, leading to the tragic confrontation.

The mine's management has assured the public that the situation is now calm and that they are collaborating closely with authorities to address the aftermath of the incident. "Our primary concern is the safety and health of all our employees and those in our community who have been directly impacted by this incident," AngloGold Ashanti said in a press release.
