In response to widespread food shortages in senior high schools (SHSs) across Ghana, President John Dramani Mahama has issued a directive to redirect food stocks originally procured for drought relief to the affected institutions.
Speaking at a National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), on Sunday, January 12, 2025, President Mahama outlined the urgent measures being taken to address the crisis. "I have asked the Chief of Staff to work with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to allocate and evacuate food that is currently in warehouses in Tema," the President announced.
He explained, "This food was imported by the previous government in response to the drought that occurred last year, but in this emergency, we need to use some of that food to feed our students." The President underscored the importance of this intervention, noting that the redistribution of food stocks aims to alleviate the immediate challenges faced by schools and ensure students continue to receive adequate nutrition.
The food in question, stored in warehouses in Tema, was initially intended to support drought-stricken areas but will now be repurposed to address the pressing needs of students affected by the ongoing shortages.
