The Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, has expressed deep concerns about the current state of the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF). According to him, the SLTF is "not fit for purpose," and is calling for prudent measures to make it more robust and easily accessible for students. His comments come in response to concerns about students' inability to access the loan, as well as the recent pledge by National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama to scrap academic fees for first-year university students. In an interview with Selorm Adonoo, on the Big Issue on Channel One TV, Mr Asare described Mahama's initiative as laudable, emphasising the need to bridge the intervention gap.
"If you are planning to target the entry into tertiary, for such a group, it's laudable, it's important that we target the intervention gap… We must create access to a realistic student loan. Because the current Student Loan Trust Fund which we reviewed in our report is not fit for purpose.
