The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has instructed all Colleges of Education to remain open in spite of a prolonged nationwide strike action by the Colleges of Education Teachers of Ghana (CETAG). The Commission noted that it had not finalized any decision to close down the schools, although academic work had been suspended for months now.
"The Commission, as of today, 16th August 2024, has not reached such a conclusion, neither has it been directed by the Honourable Minister of Education to do the same. As a result, all of the 46 Colleges of Education should stay open until further notice," the press release read. Since 14th June 2024, CETAG has been on strike over frustrations with the government on non-payments of arbitrary awards. Despite a series of talks involving both sides, the National Labour Commission (NLC), and other key stakeholders, the industrial action has still been in place.
