In a historic political shift, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged victorious in the Dome Kwabenya parliamentary race during Ghana's general elections held on Saturday, December 7, 2024. Akurugu garnered 51,634 votes, narrowly edging out Mike Oquaye Jr.
of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who obtained 50,477 votes.
This landmark win marks the first time the NDC has captured the Dome Kwabenya seat, traditionally an NPP stronghold since its creation. The constituency had long been represented by prominent NPP figures, including Adwoa Safo, who served as Member of Parliament from 2013.
Safo, however, lost her party's primaries earlier in 2024 to Oquaye Jr., CEO of the Free Zones Authority, paving the way for a fiercely contested election.
