The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared monkeypox (mpox) an international health emergency of concern. The Director-General of the WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced this in a post shared on X, on Wednesday, August 14, 2024. Dr. Ghebreyesus said that he accepted the advice of an emergency committee that the mpox outbreak constitutes an emergency of international concern. "Today, the Emergency Committee on #mpox met and advised me that in its view, the situation constitutes a public health emergency of international concern.
