Ahead of Ghana's general elections on December 7, 2024, the Ministry of the Interior has announced the temporary closure of all land borders.
This critical decision is aimed at securing the electoral process and ensuring the integrity of the elections.
In a statement, the Ministry explained that the closure would take effect immediately and remain in place until 6:00 PM on Sunday, December 8, 2024. "This decision is a precautionary measure to safeguard the electoral process," said the Ministry's spokesperson. "We want to ensure that the elections are conducted in a secure environment, free from any external influence or disruption." The Ministry emphasized the importance of this directive in maintaining a peaceful and orderly election. "We urge all citizens and travellers to respect this order," the spokesperson added. "The closure of the borders is in the interest of national security and the integrity of the elections.
It is imperative that everyone adheres to the directive to avoid any unnecessary inconveniences." State security agencies, including the police and military, will be actively involved in enforcing this temporary closure. "We are working closely with all relevant security agencies to ensure that the borders are effectively monitored and that all protocols are followed," a senior security official stated. "We are prepared to take swift action against anyone found violating the border closure directive."
