The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has reiterated that the EC's mission is to conduct free and fair elections, not to determine who becomes President or a Member of Parliament.
Addressing EC officials during what she described as her final press briefing before the 2024 election day on December 7, Jean Mensa emphasised the importance of adhering to the commission's core values of transparency, fairness, and integrity. "We believe in you and we trust in you to conduct free, fair and transparent elections that will reflect the will of the people," she added.
She further urged them to ensure that valid votes were not declared as rejected, adding, "Our collective goal is not to make anybody a President or Member of Parliament but to conduct a free and fair election," she said.
The press briefing was attended by representatives of the Association of African Election Authorities and other election observer groups.
