For the second time in less than a year, the Renal Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, which provides dialysis treatment to persons with malfunctioning kidneys, was closed for days. In all, about 21 people have lost their lives during these periods because they did not get their life-saving dialysis treatment. In September 2023, the closure of the centre reportedly led to about 18 renal patients dying, and the closure in August 2024 led to three people dying. On this edition of #SayItLoud, three renal patients share the crisis and agony they go through any time the renal centre is closed down. They describe the closure of the centre as an avoidable "death sentence." The patients also share their life stories of joblessness and pain after doctors diagnosed that their kidneys had failed.
