Danny Jordaan, president of the South African Football Association (SAFA), has been released on bail after facing allegations of misusing the association's funds for personal purposes.

The charges stem from South Africa's organised crime unit, Hawks investigation into fraud and theft within SAFA between 2014 and 2018, involving $72,000.

Jordaan, 73, allegedly hired a private security firm and a public relations company for his benefit without SAFA board approval.

A prominent figure in bringing the 2010 FIFA World Cup to South Africa, Jordaan was arrested on Wednesday and appeared at Palm Ridge Magistrates Court in Johannesburg alongside SAFA's chief financial officer, Gronie Hluyo, and businessman Trevor Neethling, both of whom were also granted bail.
