There is an ugly drama unfolding at the Volta Regional Secretariat of Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) following a decision by the National Executives Committee to force out from office, the former Executives of Ho Branch 2.For two years, the former executives have refused to leave office despite the election of new executives. But earlier this morning, a team sent by the National Executive Council to remove the old officers from office clashed with some individuals, including the former 2nd Trustee, Felix Kpor, who attempted to prevent the team from having access to the offices, leading to a chaotic scene until a team of police officers intervened. The parties have since gone into a meeting with the Volta Regional Police Command to find a better way to resolve the impasse.BackgroundPrior to the election in April, 2022 the former executives, led by the Chairman, Michael Sonkro, were accused of overstaying their four-year tenure leading to a prolonged agitation from some members. When the election was finally held and supervised by the National Executives Council, Mr Michael Sonkro, the then Chairman, was defeated. However, four other persons who were part of his administration, including the Vice Chairman, Pascal Anledo, abstained from the election. They later rejected the outcome of the election and refused to hand over to the newly elected executives.Despite several court actions and directives from NEC, the former officers remained adamant.Consequently, in December 2023, the individuals were dismissed by NEC, invoking Article 3 sub clause (b) of the Union's constitution, which reads "Membership in the Union shall constitute acceptance by each member to be bound by the provisions of this constitution, policies and directives of the National Union."In October this year, NEC further took a decision to evict the affected individuals from office and further proceed to induct the new executives into office.Read also:Bagbin is bound by the decision of the Supreme Court - William Atuguba
