In light of the recent Supreme Court ruling, Ghana's First Deputy Majority Chief Whip, Alhaji Habib Iddrisu is optimistic that Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin would respect the court's decision, which challenged his prior stance on Members of Parliament running as independent candidates. "I trust that Speaker Bagbin, as a man of peace, will not fuel tensions by disregarding the ruling," Iddrisu expressed in a candid interview with Citi News' Umaru Sanda.
The ruling marks a significant development in Ghana's political landscape, as it sets boundaries for MPs considering independent runs without losing their parliamentary seats.
Iddrisu, understanding the weight of this decision, believes the Speaker's compliance is crucial for upholding judicial respect. "The Speaker has always shown himself as someone who values the stability of our democracy.
Ignoring the Supreme Court would be a step backward," Iddrisu stated. "There's simply no reason for the Speaker to overlook the authority of the court on this matter." In the interview, Iddrisu extended his optimism to his colleagues in the minority National Democratic Congress (NDC), expecting their compliance as well. "I believe my NDC colleagues will respect the ruling and rejoin us in Parliament to carry on with our duties," he said.
