The workers of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) have announced a nationwide strike set to begin on November 12, 2024, in response to the enacted National Roads Authority (NRA) Act 2024 (Act 1118).
The indefinite strike aims to protest the new law that mandates the merger of the GHA with the Department of Urban Roads (DUR) and the Department of Feeder Roads (DFR), a move that workers argue could compromise the integrity and autonomy of the road sector.
According to GHA representatives, the decision to take industrial action is a last resort after what they describe as an ongoing lack of consideration for the concerns of sector employees.
The union claims that the NRA Act threatens the independence and effectiveness of the institutions involved in Ghana's road infrastructure, arguing that the merger could lead to operational inefficiencies and potential job losses.
