Nations FC have been dealt a major blow in their pursuit to challenge for the Ghana Premier League after their goalkeeper Kofi Mensah was handed a three-game ban by the Ghana Football Association's Disciplinary Committee for misconduct.Mensah's suspension comes after incidents from matchday 6, where the goalkeeper was found guilty of verbally abusing match officials during Nations FC's game against Bibiani Gold Stars.Nations FC drew 1-1 with Gold Stars in the encounter, but after a sitting by the GFA's Disciplinary Committee, Kofi Mensah will sit out of games against Nsoatreman, Kotoko, and Berekum Chelsea, a ruling which might go a long way in affecting Nations pursuit for the Ghana Premier League due to the goalkeeper's importance to the team.Since the start of the season, no keeper has managed to keep more clean sheets than Kofi Mensah (6), a feat he shares with Bibiani Gold Stars' goalkeeper Emmanuel Kobi.At the moment, Nations FC are the second-best side in the league, on 16 points, three behind league leaders Bibiani Gold Stars.
Nations have also put up a resolute defensive performance all season, conceding the lowest tally of goals in the division (3), a significant feat that has goalkeeper Kofi Mensah at the heart of it.His suspension may well derail the team's effort and disrupt their defensive balance, giving room for conceding goals, which will eventually culminate in dropping points.
