Executive Chairman of KGL Group, Alex Apau Dadey, calls on the government to implement measures that promote entrepreneurial growth in the country. In a recent exclusive interview with Paa Kwesi Asare on TV3's Business Focus, he emphasized that politicians do not build countries-entrepreneurs do.
Citing the successes of Nigerian business mogul and industrialist Aliko Dangote, he insisted that the government has no business doing business."Government is supposed to back the private sector; whether it's in our country under the NPP or NDC, it doesn't matter.
That's the role of the government," he said.He believes that both present and future governments must go beyond the lip service of reiterating the usual mantra that "the private sector is the engine of growth" without putting in the necessary infrastructure and policies for the private sector to thrive.Dadey argues that Ghana's economic ups and downs are a result of neglecting the private sector."Some of these downturns in our economy are connected to the fact that we have left the commanding heights of our economy in the hands of government," he stressed.Citing the transformation of the National Lotteries Authority (NLA) by his company, KGL, he highlighted how many struggling government agencies and companies can be turned around through public-private partnerships."Four years before we came, the NLA had a revenue of over a billion; they managed to incur losses of 45 million during those four years.
I don't know how they did it, because the private sector wouldn't generate over a billion in revenue and then incur losses of GHS 45 million," he stated. He insists that KGL has changed the fortunes of the NLA, contributing over 85 percent of its total revenue in addition to taxes paid to the government.Business Focus is your authoritative and comprehensive business programme on TV3, airing every Tuesday at 5 PM.
