In two years, the Akuapem Odwira Festival will celebrate its 200th anniversary, marking two centuries since Nana Addo Dankwa I first commemorated it in 1826, following the historic Katamanso War of 1824 (also known as the Battle of Dodowa).
During this significant war, the Akuapems captured the Odwira deity (Odosu) and other sacred regalia, which have since become central to the festival's celebration.
Over the years, Akuapem Odwira has evolved into a monumental and widely respected festival, renowned not only in Ghana but also internationally.
Its deep cultural significance and rich history continue to attract a broad audience, making it one of the most celebrated festivals in the country.
