Broadcaster and co-founder of music streaming service, Aftown, has debunked the perception that the Ghana Music Xperience (GMX) is the first Ghanaian music streaming platform. In an interview on Hitz FM, Antoine noted that although he is in support of the plurality of local music streaming platforms, GMX is not the first local streaming app as it's been touted.Antoine believes that his Aftown is the first streaming app to have emerged in Ghana."I saw the tag line of GMX being promoted as the very first from our end.
Like I said in the beginning there is nothing wrong with new ones coming into the market but tagging it as the first, I personally felt like it's not the right tag.
They need to rephrase that.So internally, between me and my partners we were like 'really?' If you are bringing a new platform, there is nothing wrong with that but let's tag it right," he said.Bawumia announces launch of local streaming platform in November to improve royalties for creativesHis clarification follows the launch of the GMX on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 at the De Iconic Events Centre in East Legon, Accra.Dignitaries and stakeholders from the entertainment industry, including Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and Flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Minister for Tourism, Creative Arts, and Culture, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, Bessa Simons, the President of MUSIGA; and Mr Akwesi Agyeman, the CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority were all present at the launch.Speaking as the special guest of honour, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia indicated," This is a h istoric moment for Ghana…to have our own music streaming app..it is my distinct honour and pleasure to formally launch GMX, Ghana's local music streaming app".
