The lawsuit began in 2020 when the Russian YouTube channel Tsargrad was banned and escalated in 2022 when additional Russian channels faced removal following sanctions related to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

In response, a Russian court ordered Google to reinstate the channels or endure an increasing penalty.

Google, however, refused to comply, eventually banning all Russian state-owned channels from YouTube.
