Former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu has shared a new post urging the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin to adhere to and implement the Supreme Court's recent decisions.
Following the Supreme Court's unanimous dismissal of the Speaker's application on October 30, 2024, to invalidate a suit brought by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markin, Amidu emphasized that the Speaker must respect the judiciary's authority. "The Supreme Court has clearly stated that the Speaker's application was without merit," Amidu declared.
He noted that the Court dismissed all objections raised by the Speaker regarding its jurisdiction to hear the case, underscoring the importance of compliance with the judiciary's rulings. "We must remember that the Supreme Court is the ultimate authority in determining disputes affecting citizens and the state." The Supreme Court has allowed both the Speaker and the Attorney-General to present their Statements of Case, which Amidu insists should be done without delay.
He stated, "The work of Parliament must continue smoothly, regardless of the Speaker's previous ruling." Amidu criticized the Speaker for attempting to challenge the Court's decisions, suggesting that returning court processes is inappropriate. "Every mature and reasonable person knows that if a writ is defective, you apply to have it set aside instead of sending letters back to the Court," he explained.
