Gary Nimako, the Director of Legal Affairs for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has openly criticized the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Sumana Kingsford Alban Bagbin, pointing to what he describes as avoidable chaos and unnecessary drama around a recent Supreme Court deadlock.
In an interview with Accra-based Okay FM, Nimako expressed frustration, noting that Bagbin's actions were both "disrespectful" and "condescending." "If the Honourable Speaker had simply accepted the writ of summons and the injunction application that Majority Leader Afenyo-Markin presented," Nimako asserted, "we wouldn't be dealing with all this confusion now.
The Supreme Court was already addressing the matter, and the Speaker's intervention only complicated things further." Nimako explained that instead of allowing the judicial system to take its course after Afenyo-Markin's petition, Bagbin interjected with his own ruling, disregarding the ongoing legal process. "The Speaker's refusal to comply with the Supreme Court's decision, which overturned his initial ruling, was completely disrespectful," Nimako added. "It's as if he thinks his word is above the Court's." Highlighting the broader impacts of the Speaker's actions, Nimako commented on Bagbin's attitude. "Bagbin's approach comes across as condescending," he noted, attributing the turmoil and inconveniences in Parliament to what he believes are Bagbin's personal choices. "This could have been a straightforward process if he had respected the system."
