The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has announced an immediate suspension of its strike action aimed at addressing the nation's illegal mining, or "galamsey," crisis.

This decision follows a nationwide vote among UTAG members who overwhelmingly supported a temporary pause in the strike.

In a public statement, UTAG emphasized that its campaign against galamsey has been motivated by the severe harm illegal mining inflicts on Ghana's environment, especially water bodies and communities dependent on these natural resources.

The association reiterated its dedication to preserving the country's resources and protecting communities affected by the environmental impact of illegal mining.
