The Ghana Golf Association (GGA), with support from The R&A, the world's golf governing body, held a one-day training program to equip Ghanaian sports journalists with skills in golf reporting.
Held on Friday, October 25, 2024, at the Bok Nam Kim Golf Club near Burma Camp, the workshop introduced participants to golf equipment, techniques, rules, and terminology to enhance accurate coverage.Journalists, mostly members of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), had the chance to try different strokes, navigate the course, and familiarize themselves with the sport's fundamentals, including scoring.GGA President Leonard Kwaku Okyere thanked the media professionals for their involvement, emphasizing the need to break the misconception that golf is only for the wealthy. "I thank you for coming and hope we help push golf to the wider Ghanaian audience.
I also want to clear the misconception that golf is only reserved for the rich," he said.
Okyere highlighted the sport's value in character building, adding, "The only difference between golf and other sports is that you need a little bit of patience, and it can also let us know when you are an honest person or dishonest based on what you do on the course."GGA Secretary Solomon Allotey mentioned upcoming tournaments, including the Asantehene Open, Ghana Open, Accra Golf Championship, Tafo Open, and the PGA Tournament in Damang, expressing optimism for increased media coverage.
