A leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NP) Gabby Otchere-Darko has congratulated Ghana's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Madam Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on her election as the Commonwealth Secretary-General.Madam Ayorkor Botchwey won the hotly contested Commonwealth Secretary-General elections with an overwhelming majority from the Heads of Government who cast their votes at a retreat in Apia.In a post on his X page, Mr Otchere-Darko , also a private legal practitioner, said "This Ga woman, who was a secretary in the 1990s, worked her way relentlessly up to become an MP of the then most populous constituency in Ghana, deputy minister, foreign minister, and even then remarkably made time to study to become a lawyer.
Today she has, by a landslide, been elected to lead the 56-nation Commonwealth as Secretary General."The first ever African woman to do so.
The second woman to do so (Patricia Scotland as first) and the second ever African to head the body (Emeka Anyaoku was first in 1990).
Ghana is very proud of you!
