Three Members of Parliament from the NDC caucus-Alhassan Suhuyini of Tamale North, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa of North Tongu, and Francis Xavier Sosu of Madina-have filed a private member's motion aimed at revoking Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, which currently permits mining in forest reserves.
This motion seeks to repeal Section 3(2) of the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulations 2022, effectively stripping the President of the authority to issue mining leases for exploration in these protected areas.
The initiative to revoke LI 2462 originated from Organised Labour as part of a broader effort to combat illegal mining.
