The Senior Staff Association of the Volta River Authority (VRA) has indicated that its leadership will meet on Friday, October 25 to deliberate on the suspension of four bills aimed at merging certain institutions within the energy sector.
The Ministry of Energy has formally requested Parliament to pause its discussions on these bills, which include proposals to merge the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) with the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) and establish a new Thermal Power Authority using the VRA's thermal plants.
However, it faced significant opposition from stakeholders, particularly within the VRA, leading to the request by the ministry to parliament to halt discussions on the bill to allow for further consultations with affected parties.
In an interview with Citi News, the Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of VRA, Theophilus Tetteh, stated that the group continues to advocate for a total withdrawal of the bills. "We've received a copy from our Chief Executive and as partners in good corporate governance, we're going to look at it, come Friday, all the unions within VRA will meet and we will look at the entirety of the letter and we will also come out with our response to that letter. "So far that is what we are saying that our request to the Minister [Herbert Krapa] and the President [Akufo-Addo] is a total withdrawal of this bill.
